What is ALS?
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, often called Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a disease that affects the nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord. It causes muscles to weaken and can make it hard to move, talk, swallow, or even breathe over time. The disease doesn’t typically affect the ability to think or remember things.
Didn't the Ice Bucket Challenge cure that?
No, but it was an incredible start to driving awareness.
As of today, there’s no cure. The average prognosis is 2-5 years from the first symptom, and it can affect anyone, at any time.
ALS doesn’t just affect the person who has it, but also their families and friends, who may help care for them as the disease progresses. Many people with ALS need specialized care and technology just to do everyday things.
That’s why awareness and support are so important. We believe that ALS is not incurable, it is underfunded.
